GIAGKINIDES

“Yagkini”, of Asia Minor origin, means fire, conflagration. Rebetiko was the urban popular songs of the Greeks, especially the poorest, from the late 19th century to the 1950s. The word rebetis is today construed to mean a person who embodies aspects of character, dress, behavior, morals and ethics associated with a particular subculture. Rebetes used to say “I have yagkini in my heart”, to declare that the love fire was burning inside them. Yagkinides, two students, Spyros and Panagiotis, have managed within a short period of time to make rebetiko popular among the young people. They are faithfully followed by their fanatical audience on social media, but also on live shows and, above all, on the road, which – as they say – continues to feed them and shape them as persons.
